It is a sacred city
situated in the deep south of Sri Lanka close to Tissamaharama. Kataragama is famous
because the shrine of god Skandha is situated there.
He is the ruling deity of
Kataragama. People believe that he extends his influence throughout the
southern region of the country. Kataragama attracts devotees of all faiths
throughout the year. People go there to worship god Skandha and get his
blessing pilgrims also go there to vows, fulfill vows and pay penance. During
the festival season devotees could watch the perahera and rituals such as the
fire walking ceremony.
