THE FATHER OF FREE EDUCATION IN SRI LANKA



Dr C. W. W. Kannangara was born on the 13th of October 1884 in Ambalangoda. He began his education at Wesleyan college in Ambalangoda. There he obtained a scholarship and entered Richmond college, Galle. He ended his schooling after passing the Cambridge Senior Certificate Examination. He obtained the highest marks in Mathematics. His first employment was as a teacher, at Richmond Collage, Galle itself. Later he studies Law and became a Lawyer in 1910. At the 1931 general elections he entered the state council as the representative of Galle. He became the minister of education from 1931-1947.

STORY OF KING PANDUKABHAYA



Pandukabhaya was one of the great kings of ancient Ceylon. It is said that he ruled our island for seventy years. But he did not spend his childhood in a palace, like other princes and princesses.

A LEGEND ABOUT THE VEDDAHS

It is believed by some people that the Veddahs of Ceylon are the descendants of Vijaya and Kuweni. There is a legend about this, and here it is.

Rathnapura Maha Saman Dewale Perahera



This perahera is usually held in August. It is a very colorful one. This perahera parades the Devale Grounds.

Kataragama


It is a sacred city situated in the deep south of Sri Lanka close to Tissamaharama. Kataragama is famous because the shrine of god Skandha is situated there.

Anuradhapura is Sri Lanka’s first capital. It is situated 250km from Colombo. It is the most ancient and most famous of the ruined cities of Sri Lanka.
